Freight Container Home for $40,000

Would you live in a $40,000 shipping container? As the options for prefab homes grow, Dwight Doerkson is adding to the choices by converting shipping containers into an eco-friendly home. Although, Mr. Doerkson is not the first designer to use a container for a home, his is limited to one container while most of the other designs use several to create a traditional home. The interior is made up of recycled rubber tires for the floor, bio-based green foam insulation and is made to live off the grid. Sold as a “short-term living space” these customizable and portable homes have solar panel options, 12V lighting, optional solar refrigerator and an optional compost toilet. The “ecopods” were born from Mr. Doerkson’s dream to create an affordable weekend cottage. Although, not sure how you transport this “home” it may be the future of recreational vehicles.

One of the inspirations for this website has been the years of reading Dwell Magazine, who have just released their Greenest Homes from the past few years. You’ll see some green home designs that are built right into the ground and some that have been featured on Wired magazine.

These houses truly blend form and function and we can only hope that the rest of the world adopts the innovation displayed by these green homes.

Pools for Green Homes

Swimming in the pool is a favorite Southern California activity, but there are some negative effects of pool swmming that are some times easily forgotten. Hair damage caused by chlorine and increase in asthama attacks are byproducts of chlorinated water. Just recently, it’s been discovered that urine and sweat combined with chlorine reacts to create a toxic product called chloramine.

Apparently, some people have already known about this and have incorporated green living into even their pool designs. At the Daily Green, they’ve compiled a list of 23 of the most gorgeous “natural” pools around.
